Montana hobbit house

“The Hobbit House, in northwest Montana, about a three-hour drive from Spokane, Wash., is a guesthouse. Number of units: one. But it is a large unit. The Web site, which the reporter studies before arriving, shows a 1,000-square-foot structure built into a hill, on a 20-acre site dotted with structures that range from small to perfect for squashing with your foot: a four-foot stump-shaped troll house, a few round-door hobbit houses with chimney pipes and several shoe-box-size fairy houses.…”

Definitely weird setup here (maybe Steve should’ve kept smoking pot), but I liked the photo (by Janie Osborne for The New York Times.

New photos of Lloyd House’s Leaf House

Lloyd House was the featured builder in Builders of the Pacific Coast. Michael McNamara, who introduced me to Lloyd in the first place, just sent me these really nice photos he took of Lloyd’s Leaf House. Michael says: “…I had an occasion not long ago to take some photos of the interior of Lloyd House’s Leaf House…. It has always impressed me as such a perfect little place. So complete. So minimal.

Right now it’s uninhabited… But it doesn’t feel empty or raw. Very peaceful and complete, even without the usual trappings of living. Just a few cushions and anyone could move in. It’s being maintained rather well as part of the park.

Thought you might be interested in seeing a different angle.”

(Note how the ridge beam (found on beach) cantilevers way past its supporting post.)

“This artistic and colorful fence is in the arts district in Silver City, New Mexico. Part of the fence appears to be from an old stamped metal ceiling.…”

This is a great blog. I love the stuff shown in this series of posts: https://altbuildblog.blogspot.com/2011/05/more-on-fences.html#more

Madrid’s green wall

“The vertical garden, designed by Patrick Blanc, is 4 storeys high and takes up one outside wall, overlooking the plaza. It has 15,000 plants from more than 250 different species and most of it is flourishing.

There is an irrigation system which seems to be ongoing, given the gentle mist of droplets that emanates from the garden. The architects said that they wanted to ‘create a very unusual encounter between the rough and the natural, …to incorporate nature so there can be the smell of a garden where you would not expect it.'”
