Tumbleweed Tiny House a Hit at Maker Faire

There were long lines all day at Tumbleweed’s tiny home. The Maker Faire (2012, San Mateo) has good vibes this year. Huge crowds, sunny skies, an instant village of creative people for 2 days. I had a great crowd for my tiny homes talk last night, doing another one tonight. The speakers before me were talking about backyard chickens and they had a sellout crowd. Who would’ve thought (40 years ago) that all these Whole Earth Catalog concepts would take such root today…

Anyone Have Recommendations on Hearing Aids?

I need to get one (my latest road trip proved that), but I’m reluctant to get a $2000-$3000 one because I know I’m going to forget about it and jump in the ocean or in a creek or wash my hair. I just don’t have the constant presence of mind to remember to take it out when I get wet (which is often). At the other end of the price scale are $39.95 hearing aids (well, amplifiers), so I figure that there must be hearing aids in the $300-$500 zone that are in between. Anyone have any experience?

Our First eBook Gets QED Award

When it came time to do our first e-book — Marathon: You Can Do It!, by Jeff Galloway — we couldn’t find anyone we thought would do a good enough job converting print book to ebook. So Rick Gordon did the book “in-house,” for the iPad and the Kindle. It came out really well: typography, color, graphics, and perhaps most importantly, smooth flowing of the many training charts in the book. I compared it with all the other iPad e-books on running, and it looks way better.

We entered it in the non-fiction category of the Publishing Innovation Awards this year and it was was one of three runner-ups for the Publishing Innovation Awards in the non-fiction ebook category, from among a lot of entrants. (There were separate categories for apps and multimedia enhanced ebooks.) It was awarded the QED (Quality-Excellence-Design) seal.

Here’s what the judges said about Rick’s work:

Kevin Kelly’s Cool Tools

This is the single most useful site/blog on the web for me. I can’t say how many useful things this blog has turned me on to. It’s like the electronic Whole Earth Catalog, but what’s better is that it uses no paper, and it’s daily.

Kevin Kelly, ex-Whole Earth Review editor, founding editor at Wired mag, author, photographer, explorer, runs this operation, with daily reviews of useful stuff.

“Cool tools really work. A cool tool can be any book, gadget, software, video, map, hardware, material, or website that is tried and true. All reviews on this site are written by readers who have actually used the tool and others like it. Items can be either old or new as long as they are wonderful. We only post things we like and ignore the rest. Suggestions for tools much better than what is recommended here are always wanted. Tell us what you love.”

Easiest way to get there is to go to kk.org, then click on “Cool Tools” at the left.

Amazing Video: ‘Jet Man’ stunts alongside fighter jets over Alps

“Amazing pictures from Switzerland show where “jetman” Yves Rossy gave this incredible flying display, using a tailor-made jet pack. The aviation enthusiast leapt from a helicopter and performed a series of aerial acrobatics above the Alps. He then joined two jet planes in a synchronized flight. To synchronise their flight paths the jets reduced their speed to 220 kilometres per hour (137 miles per hour), which put their engines at a point close to stalling. Rossy’s previous aerial feats include flying the English Channel and looping the loop around a hot-air balloon.…”

More on Kindle Fire

Rick Gordon found this very comprehensive article. (We ordered a Fire yesterday — for one thing, to become familiar with it in order to see which of our books might work on it.)

“…The Fire is a marvelous device. And Apple and Amazon couldn’t have created a more complementary pair of tablets if they’d colluded on it. Want a tablet that does everything, and which does books exceptionally well? Buy an iPad. Want something more compact, and you’re not terribly interested in much more than content consumption? The Fire is aces. I feel as if every potential tablet consumer will recognize themselves in one of those two descriptions.…”

The Art of Endless Upgrades by Kevin Kelly

Just ran across this post of Kevin’s, from 16 April 2011:

“…It’s taken me 60 years, but I had an ephipany recently: Everything, without exception, requires additional energy and order to maintain itself. Not just living things, but the most inanimate things we know of: stone gravemarkers, iron columns, copper pipes, gravel roads, a piece of paper. None will last very long without attention and fixing, and the loan of additional order. Life is maintenance.…”

I’ve just been cruising through Kevin’s writings (kk.org). Tremendous amount of focussed,thought-provoking output.

George Carlin – Modern Man

“I’m a modern man, digital and smoke-free; a man for the millennium. A diversified, multi-cultural, post-modern deconstructionist; politically, anatomically and ecologically incorrect. I’ve been uplinked and downloaded, I’ve been inputted and outsourced. I know the upside of downsizing, I know the downside of upgrading. I’m a high-tech low-life. A cutting-edge, state-of-the-art, bi-coastal multi-tasker, and I can give you a gigabyte in a nanosecond. I’m new-wave, but I’m old-school; and my inner child is outward-bound.…”
