Soulful old VW van

This van some how just had it. (I’m sure this will only make sense to past or present-VW van owners.) It was rigged up nicely for living inside.

Vintage VW vans

Greg Urrutia with his ’60 VW van. There were 3 of these old vans downtown last Friday. I’d just swam across the channel and ran on Stinson beach and when I got back, I grabbed my camera out of the truck. (I’d owned a ’60 VW van that I’d driven across the river into Puerto Vallarta in ’63, to NYC and back in ’64 (December-brrr!), and on (and in) which I’d carried half of the materials for my house in Big Sur in ’67, so I love these old vans.)

This is a group of guys who own vintage VW’s.

Check out: https://www.beetleball.com/

Requirements: that you have a VINTAGE CLASS VW (1966 and Under): Bugs, Bus, Single Cabs, Crew Cabs, Ghia’s, Fastback, Notchback, Squareback

Exploded Bug poster by Peter Aschwanden

The Power of boingboing: we got over 6000 hits on our website for our septic systems book from this mention on boingboing by By Mark Frauenfelder on Feb. 23, 2010:

“The late Peter Aschwanden was best known for his extremely detailed and humorous illustrations for John Muir’s 1969 book, How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive: A Manual of Step-by-Step Procedures for the Compleat Idiot. His cover illustration for The Septic System Owner’s Manual almost makes me wish I had a septic tank.”

At Peter’s website, you can order books, posters, and T-shirts. His “Exploded Bug” poster (above) is amazing! https://www.peteraschwanden.com

Hot Rod Ford in Petaluma

I went to Petaluma yesterday to get some electrical work done on my truck. I rode my bike across town to a Peet’s coffee shop to hang out while the work was being done and spotted this little gem parked by a kayak dealer. I don’t know much about hot rods, but this little Ford has just got it. Vroom-vroomn!

Desert Living Big Tough 4×4 Van

Parked on a street in San Rafael last week. There’s a mother of a thick-plate steel front bumper with neatly-mounted winch (it’s great to be able to pull people’s cars out of ditches). How about taking off for a 6-month trip to Baja, camping for weeks or more at a time? Mileage probably ain’t grand, but how about all resources you’ll save by living in the desert? Just a thought spurred by seeing this competent machine.

Toyota 4×4 Hi-Ace Vans: "Toughest Vehicle on Planet"

Jonathan Hanson on driving on African Savannah at high speed in Land Rovers.: It was “…like…driving across a plowed field over which concrete had been poured to solidify the ridges.”

“At 100 kph we danced over them with actual tire-to-earth contact occurring perhaps 10% of the time. But the most astonishing sights were to occasional overstuffed Toyota Hi-Ace van taxis coming the other way at our speed plus, wheels pistoning up and down at an insane pace and the entire vehicle often sideways in a crazy drift around curves…the humble Hi-Ace has to be the toughest vehicle on the planet.”

Back to the land with Maria Kalman

“And the Pursuit of Happiness—Back to the Land” is a wonderful hand-lettered article by prolific artist Maria Kalman: in the NY Times. Farmers, fast food, healthy food, edible schoolyards. Sent us by Leo Hetzel. Photo is of farmer Mickey Murch’s rolling food van. He drives it into the small town where he lives to sell fresh bread and other food.
