Shoulders and Knees, Oh Please

It’s been almost 4 months since my shoulder surgery, and a few days ago, I realized the tendon was finally reconnected to the bone and strengthening. Yahoo! Yesterday I was talking to Elmer Collett, former 49er guard and neighbor, about how when you’ve got an injury, it seems like it’ll never heal and then, one day, voila! You’re on the plus side of the situation. He knew exactly what I meant.

I had a bit of a setback, let it rest, then started doing rehab exercises, and in the last few days have started using my Vasa Trainer, a pulley type device for swimmers and surfers, which approximates paddling, and it felt OK. I’m gonna be able to surf again, not just sit on the beach or cliff and wistfully watch the action.

It was a dramatic change, in both function and mood.

The recoverability of the human body is awesome. Dr. Henry Bieler, in his great book “Food Is Your Best Medicine,” has a chapter titled “The Magnificent Human Body.” And so it is.

Riding the Dream – Adventure Blog – Rock Climbing, Snowboarding, Surfing

“On the final day of September 2007, I left Jasper Alberta Canada without any agenda, plans or time. Living simply from my passion of photography and writing, living a freedom life while riding my Suzuki DR 350 motorcycle in search of rock climbing, surfing and experiencing different cultures along the way.
Now nearly 100 000 km, 19 countries and 4 years later… I continue to ride the dream… north from South America.
You can follow my stories and collection of images through my blog.

Cartop Camping on California Coast

Hi Lloyd,
Love your blog. This guy has been living in the Five Cities area on the Central Coast of California for the last year or so in this setup. Often parks at the beach. Here he is yesterday cruising across the border of Arroyo Grande and Grover “City” Beach at Grand and Oak Park Blvd. Really well built structure atop
1980s volvo. Haven’t seen smoke from that chimney yet but…if its black we’ve got ourselves a new Pope, if white not? I dunno.
Best to you,
Matthew Eames

Wetsuits For Mini Surfers

Late Friday afternoon, I spotted these 2 little kids on the beach: Levi, age 18 months and Tyler, age 5. Parents are Chris and Allison Coolidge. They were sitting so the water would come in and get them wet. I didn’t know they made wetsuits this small. Look at Levi: gremlin in the making…

Surf Rack On Bike

Surfer Jeff and his homemade bike surf rack. He used a curved piece of scrap metal—can’t see it here, it’s on other side—covered with duct tape, strapped to side of bike. He can go from his house to the water all on his own power. No gasoline.

Surfing Under Golden Gate Bridge

Yesterday morning. This spot under the bridge is one of my go-to places when in the city. The guy in the outrigger was being very cautious. The beach here consists of big boulders, not a place to lose what looks to be an elegant, expensive boat.
