Wood Stove by Tim Biggins

Hi,

Thought you might enjoy seeing an example of a hand crafted wood stove – made by Tim Biggins on Hornby Island BC. Several of Tim’s stoves were featured in the Builders of the Pacific Coast book. This body is made of three truck rims, the door is made from the round end of a propane tank and the base is a huge block (pulley) from a spar tree. 30 years old and still keeping us warm.

Grandpa Launch

I just got this email from my friend John Hulls, whose dad recently passed away. Brought tears to my eyes.

“Hi, Lloyd,

One bit of sad news, Robin, who always enjoyed his visits to W. Marin, meeting you and reading your blog, passed away. He stayed alert till the end, and rather fancied what the children’s author, Phillip Pullman (The Golden Compass) did for his dad, which was to scatter his ashes by means of 4 Guy Fawkes skyrockets. Robin told me not to try it because of the huge fines in Massachusetts for illegal fireworks. However, I discovered a loophole in the model rocket laws, (private property/calculated flight plan, and stay out of controlled air space) and we scattered his ashes over his favorite sailing spot. The grandkids all got together to help build the rocket, which I modified, and you can see the results in this video. He would have been delighted to be on YouTube, too.

Yoav lives in a structure called “yurt” and tries to maintain as naturalistic a life as possible.
I followed Yoav for a few days around his home and tried to capture his ‘life style’ in a day.…”

Fairy Houses Popping Up in San Francisco

“Turns out, Golden Gate Park isn’t the only desirable place to live if you’re a teeny tiny someone. Bernal Heights has become the latest hot-spot for the new fairy houses that have been springing up in San Francisco this year.
As Bernalwood notes, the neighborhood has spotted a few teeny tiny tree houses of their own in recent days. They’re as small as the tree houses found in Golden Gate Park, although, we noticed the architecture takes on a more quirky bohemian appearance, reflective of the human-sized houses you find in Bernal Heights.…”

Daily Flash: Jay Nelson/Mollusk Surf Shop

Last week I met Kevin Kelly in San Francisco at Trouble Coffee to talk about his forthcoming book, Cool Tools (which looks sensational), and we walked a couple of blocks over to Mollusk Surf Shop. Artist Jay Nelson had just completed this cocoon-shaped loft, and below is a photo of the interior of his little 8-foot surf boat (see page 180 of Tiny Homes).
