Godfrey at Work on a Mermaid

This was after about half an hour with his tiny electric Stihl chain saw and Bruno’s large chisel and small adze. Wonderful art — carvings and paintings — have flowed from him all his life. I met him on the beach in Yelapa (south of Puerto Vallarta) in 1963, and he came back with us to Mill Valley in my 1960 VW bus (see a full account of him in Builders of the Pacific Coast). Ironic that the world does not know of him. I saw a painting of a sort of skull-like head by artist Jean-Michel Basquiat that was bought by a Japanese internet billionaire for over 100 million $ last week. Godfrey’s art is better than this. Go figure.

Lloyd and Bruno

Godfrey and I drove out to visit and spend the night with Bruno and Mecea. I hadn’t seen Bruno for 3 years. We had a shot of homemade calvados, then red wine with dinner of barbecued salmon with rice, yams, salad, piece of chocolate for desert. I slept on Bruno’s boat, Godfrey slept in the van. The next morning Godfrey took his mini Stihl electric chainsaw and Bruno’s small adze and large chisel and roughed out a mermaid on a log.

Art of Godfrey Stephens

Check out Godfrey Stephens’ hashtags: https://abphy.com/hashtag/godfreystephens

I’m hanging out today in Victoria, BC, with my good friend Godfrey (we met on the beach in Yelapa, near Puerto Vallarts in 1964). He is in my mind one of the major artists in the world, but somehow relatively undiscovered. He’s a whirlwind of creative energy. More to follow. See writeup on him and his carvings and paintings in Builders of the Pacific Coast.

I’m at the start of a 3-week trip publicizing Small Homes: The Right Size. I’ll be in BC for 10 days, then on to Winnipeg, Toronto, then NYC.

And Now, Red…

On side street in San José del Cabo. Sign says “Casa dela güera.” Not “guerra” as in “war.” Güera is listed as “blond” in Spanish dictionary.

Which Cover Do You Like Best?

Rick and I are in the final stages of preparing Small Homes for the printers. We changed the cover from an earlier version, which showed a small turn-of-the-century home in Santa Cruz (in this revised cover, it’s the middle image in the left hand column), because a single image didn’t seem to represent the diversity of images (120 or so small homes) in the book. Hence the collage.

Below are two alternatives, the same except for the background color. In the one with the red, it’s similar-looking to Home Work, Builders of the Pacific Coast, and Tiny Homes on the Move. Some of our savvy book friends think it’s too similar, and that another color would distinguish it from the other books. Hence the other with the dark green background.

Comments, please. Which do you like? Do you see any problem in this cover being similar to our other books?
