Silk Factory in Cambodia

I shot this in 2004. It’s the Angkor Artisans Silk Factory in the countryside near Siem Riep, Cambodia. There are fields of mulberry bushes, which are harvested and fed to silkworms, which in turn produce the silk. It is then processed, and woven by women on looms in this building to produce various items.

Trailer with Outdoor Area

This is a brilliant way to add square footage. A minimal, lightweight, inexpensive roof and deck give you an expanded living area (during good weather). The warmer the climate, the better this works. You can barbecue, eat, and socialize out on the deck.

I saw a place in Baja where the gringo owner, who came there only periodically, had built a small concrete block unit with a steel door where he locked up and stored all his stuff. He had a large roofed-over with a split bamboo covering for shade; when he came down to his land, he opened up the unit, pulled everything out (including hammocks), and lived mostly outside.

Jackie Wilson – Danny Boy

From Rick Gordon. Rick and I were watching The Ink Spots sing “If I Didn’t Care,” with Bill Kenny’s bell-like, clear tenor notes, and Rick asked if I’d heard this one.

Stonework in Ireland

I shot this in 1972, somewhere on the west coast of Ireland. It didn’t look like a master mason did the work, but more like a farmer with an intuitive sense of building. I love the soulful rock work, the colors and placement of stones — obviously gathered nearby. Look at the five different funky window/door lintels. Looks like a fairly new slate roof. Abandoned, but looks sound.

Garden in Connecticut

In the early ’80s, I was staying with my friend John Welles, who contributed to both Shelter and Shelter II, at his home in West Cornwall, Connecticut. We needed vegetables for dinner one night, so we went over to a neighbor’s garden, where John had permission to glean produce. While John picked chard, lettuce, tomatoes, etc., I shot this photo.
