Last night I had a great crowd at Builders Booksource in Berkeley for a presentation on Tiny Homes on the Move. Two tiny homes were parked outside: Rick Auerbach’s pickup truck road rig, and Jay Marlette’s copper-roofed trailer, as shown here:

I made this trailer after I made the decision to drop my crazy mortgage and devote less time working and more time with my family and to enjoy projects like this one. So far we’ve taken it to Kanab Utah, Burning Man, Grass Valley, and other little trips. Its a 1976 Scamp and I went with a Vardo theme. The roof is wood, fiberglass, and copper anodized aluminum. The roof was designed to house a solar panel, a canopy and to function as a bike rack for two long cargo bikes. Friends and artists helped a lot with this.

Tuesday I drove up to Petaluma to look at a fishing kayak.* The hills have changed from green to dried-out golden, almost white in the bright sun. Lots of growth due to late rains, grasses waving in the afternoon wind…Speaking of which, we’ve had a week of early morning low tides, but also winds. Took my kayak across a local bay a few days ago, the wind was coming up. I thought about turning back, but it started dying down.

 No luck getting horsenecks, but I got a mess of cockles plus 2 nice rock crabs; good way to spend the morning…steamed cockles last night, but they wouldn’t open after 15 minutes steaming, tough little fuckers, and steaming them this long made them tough…gotta figure this out, these aren’t the compliant commercial clams you can buy…seaweed was thick on the beach, so loaded my truck up, it’s getting rinsed and added to compost pile…just ordered a rod and spinning reel for stripers…my ongoing food-from-sea endeavors sure are fun, plus with the kayak, I’m getting a workout…

I’m sure I’ve mentioned it before, but check out https://www.monkeyfacenews.com/, Kirk Lombard’s writings on fishing the Pacific Coast. Just found this video, go to 3:22 to see him catching a mess of herring to great music and with ayuda from a fellow fisherman…I’m goin’ fishin too…

*I’m pretty well settled on a 12′ Tarpon 120 by Wilderness Systems. It’s another world from my 20-year-old 12′ Scrambler by Ocean Kayak (which I’m gonna sell cheap). Having such a great boat will be an incentive to get out there often…also getting a sail (Wind Paddle Scout Sail) — minimal, will only go downwind…

Well actually, NYC and her hot cousin, Brooklyn…

This was, from start to finish, a great trip. I had biz class ticket due to frequent flier miles and it was a Boeing 757-200, a great model plane, the biz class seat reclined so you could lie flat + an individual monitor for each seat (for all seats in the plane) and maybe 50 movies plus TV programs to choose from. I watched “Tim’s Vermeer,” a documentary about an incredible guy who had a theory about Vermeer’s use of a camera obscura…Staying in the Village was fantastic. It’s still a village, albeit inhabited I would guess mostly by richos. You can get into very quiet cul-de-sacs, lots of leafy trees, tons of restaurants…speaking of which here’s where I ate. Often as not these were places I’d sussed out by walking by:

-Buvette, 42 Grove, French bistro, unique, stylish, also pretty well known

-Taverna, 63 Bedford, Greek food, genius chef. Great Feng-shui due to eye-level mirrors all around room…BTW, around the corner was Nakazawa Sushi, no window menu, obviously expensive, filled with smug looking youngish people; ah, to have a salary of 300K/year…

-Yerba Buena, 23 Avenue A, East Village, chef from Mexico City, Latina fusion

-Ivan Ramen Slurp Shop, Gotham West Market, 611 11th Ave. Good, inexpensive. Another place in this complex has over 400 types of beer, which you casn buy and take to the Slurp Shop.

-Mo Mo Sushi in Bushwick, totally excellent. Unusual.

-Gastromarket, 315 10th Ave (near Highline), cask conditioned beer and great food
