Young Red-Shouldered Hawk in Garden

Talk about the “evil eye.”

About Lloyd Kahn

Lloyd Kahn started building his own home in the early '60s and went on to publish books showing homeowners how they could build their own homes with their own hands. He got his start in publishing by working as the shelter editor of the Whole Earth Catalog with Stewart Brand in the late '60s. He has since authored six highly-graphic books on homemade building, all of which are interrelated. The books, "The Shelter Library Of Building Books," include Shelter, Shelter II (1978), Home Work (2004), Builders of the Pacific Coast (2008), Tiny Homes (2012), and Tiny Homes on the Move (2014). Lloyd operates from Northern California studio built of recycled lumber, set in the midst of a vegetable garden, and hooked into the world via five Mac computers. Feather analysis shows the Costa’s Hummingbird was born near Yosemite National Park

The mystery of how the tiny hummingbird got to Saskatoon caught the eye of Environment Canada Chemist Geoff Koehler. His team used a technique called stable isotope analysis to examine a tail feather and determine where the bird came from.

I scrolled a long way through your posts, wanting to put Yosemite Sam’s story in with one of your hummingbird posts, but ran out of steam here. So Yosemite will keep your Red Shouldered Hawk Company…grin.

Along the way, I slowly scrolled through your posts fr current to this one..(have not been able to keep up for some time)…WELL…my smile got bigger each post, and I very much enjoyed going over them (some have previously seen but nice to redo).

Something I noticed, and wondered if you realised this…
    — as I went over posts where you (YOU) were photographed listening to someone explain their work/book/building/thoughts, something most excellent struck me. Of course you were interested.. Of course you like/liked seeing what folks are up to. Of Course. BUT…did you ever realise the Pure Joy and Satisfaction those folks experienced (as written on their faces) having the opportunity to “explain” to someone knowledgeable, interested, attentive, inventive? Very much struck me (from their faces) how great and meaningful your Gift was. So very well done, Lloyd.
