This is a drawing of the lumber and passenger steamer Seafoam, loading lumber at the point off the town of Mendocino, sometime in the early 1900s. It’s hard to believe what these guys did in heavy seas, off of rocky shores back in the day; check out the guy riding on the logs! About Lloyd Kahn
Lloyd Kahn started building his own home in the early '60s and went on to publish books showing homeowners how they could build their own homes with their own hands. He got his start in publishing by working as the shelter editor of the
Whole Earth Catalog with Stewart Brand in the late '60s. He has since authored six highly-graphic books on homemade building, all of which are interrelated. The books, "The Shelter Library Of Building Books," include

It gives some perspective doesn’t it. Reminds me of the lifesaving station at Chicamacomico on the Outer Banks, and the incredible deeds done to save lives from ships wrecked off the coast.
