I’m doing a slide show and talk at Bookshop Santa Cruz tomorrow — Tuesday, April 7,at 7:30 p.m. (1520 Pacific Avenue). I was a Santa Cruz beach lifeguard in 1955. When I went to Stanford (entry requirement much lower back then !), I spent more time in Santa Cruz than in Palo Alto. My last class was at noon Thursday and I’d head for the beach, coming back Sunday night. Although it’s changed a lot, it’s still a great town. I love the drive down the coast (taking surfboard) and Bookshop Santa Cruz is one of the Great Bookstores.

About Lloyd Kahn
Lloyd Kahn started building his own home in the early '60s and went on to publish books showing homeowners how they could build their own homes with their own hands. He got his start in publishing by working as the shelter editor of the
Whole Earth Catalog with Stewart Brand in the late '60s. He has since authored six highly-graphic books on homemade building, all of which are interrelated. The books, "The Shelter Library Of Building Books," include
Shelter,
Shelter II (1978),
Home Work (2004),
Builders of the Pacific Coast (2008),
Tiny Homes (2012), and
Tiny Homes on the Move (2014). Lloyd operates from Northern California studio built of recycled lumber, set in the midst of a vegetable garden, and hooked into the world via five Mac computers. You can check out videos (one with over 450,000 views) on Lloyd by doing a search on YouTube:
Enjoyed your presentation at Bookshop SC last night. You've got a good low-key, self-deprecating style. I am struck by the absence of the regulatory stranglehold which stifles much creativity. Many of the builders in your observations must serve both creative and good-sense(safe & sane) roles. Crawlspaces come in handy. As a builder, it's good to see the joy put into the house, not only the effort. I think that you are right-on with your next project-small houses-are an excellent evolution. Thanks again Jess
Lloyd, wish you could put the talk and slide show online. By the way thanks for the vicarious central American vacation!
Hey Lloyd
I have been following your blog for a while – suggested by my ex – Sally, on Hornby Island. Thanks for doing it, I really enjoy following your travels.
I have been building a small house in Mexico and started a blog of my own this year. The oldest entry shows some pics. I bought a small lot there, and sold half to a friend, now it is a really small lot! If you are down that way,(Melaque, Jalisco) or on Salt Spring Island, where I live in the summer, please let me know – I would like to meet you.
cheers mate, allan mather
ps I would love one of those amazing camping vehicles I saw on your blog. A bit pricey for me though. My old '74 Dodge 20 foot motor home died recently, so I am building a lightweight camper for my Mazda pickup. I had a factory camper, but it was too heavy.
