Old Family Photos

My mom is 99 and living in a retirement home. When she moved there I ended up with boxes of family photos. Here are a couple:

My mother, Virginia Essie Jones when she was about 20 in Salt Lake City

My dad, Lloyd Kahn Sr., in his 20s in San Francisco. He lived until he was 92.

My mother’s cousins, twins Beverly and Betty, were dancers.

While digging around in the old photos I came up with this one of our singing quartet, The Uncalled Four, at Lowell High School, San Francisco, class of 1952. I played a ukulele and a gut bucket, and we did 20s songs and some barbershop harmony. Left to right, me, Bill Bixby (later of Incredible Hulk and My Favorite Martian fame, John Lodmell, and Don “Whitey” Schaller. We did an appearance on Channel 5 in San Francisco, and it was Bixby’s first TV appearance.

About Lloyd Kahn

Lloyd Kahn started building his own home in the early '60s and went on to publish books showing homeowners how they could build their own homes with their own hands. He got his start in publishing by working as the shelter editor of the Whole Earth Catalog with Stewart Brand in the late '60s. He has since authored six highly-graphic books on homemade building, all of which are interrelated. The books, "The Shelter Library Of Building Books," include Shelter, Shelter II (1978), Home Work (2004), Builders of the Pacific Coast (2008), Tiny Homes (2012), and Tiny Homes on the Move (2014). Lloyd operates from Northern California studio built of recycled lumber, set in the midst of a vegetable garden, and hooked into the world via five Mac computers. 1. Hello. My name’s David. I’m an author and journalist.

I spoke to you, awhile back, for my upcoming book on the career and life of actor Bill Bixby, which I plan to finish this year.

Lloyd, I was wondering if you recall the approximate date when you and Bill, along with the other two members of the singing quartet, performed at the KPIX television station?

Lloyd, as well, I wondering if you could scan that picture of you and Bill, and the other two members of the quartet, at a high-resolution, perhaps 600 DPI, and send to me for use in my book?

    Thank you.

    David Grove.
