This is the latest creation I’ve shot for Builders of the Northwest Coast. Artist and impeccable craftsman Vin Gorman has spent about five years (not full-time) building this sauna. It’s portable, has eight ribs, and bolts together in sections. I’ll try to post sneak previews of the book (due out early 2007) from time to time.
Concrete ribs are pre-cast
Interior is like a jewel box.
About Lloyd Kahn
Lloyd Kahn started building his own home in the early '60s and went on to publish books showing homeowners how they could build their own homes with their own hands. He got his start in publishing by working as the shelter editor of the
Whole Earth Catalog with Stewart Brand in the late '60s. He has since authored six highly-graphic books on homemade building, all of which are interrelated. The books, "The Shelter Library Of Building Books," include
Shelter,
Shelter II (1978),
Home Work (2004),
Builders of the Pacific Coast (2008),
Tiny Homes (2012), and
Tiny Homes on the Move (2014). Lloyd operates from Northern California studio built of recycled lumber, set in the midst of a vegetable garden, and hooked into the world via five Mac computers. You can check out videos (one with over 450,000 views) on Lloyd by doing a search on YouTube:
I knew Vin Gorman, years ago..back on mAUI,HI. He was always a great friend, when you needed one.Always ready with a kind nurturing word,..and an often at the ready giftwrapped smile, which he would generously share…customized just for you.(Not to mention the "magic smoke"..we would communally inbibe of,..to stretch the mind,(or at least the eye-lid of the 3rd eye). Anyway,It's a real beauty Vin! I like how exquisite the interior design is,..and yet how the over-lay pattern..(or shell)..is cleverly, and holisticly taken from nature. I give a salute to you old freind,..as the master artisan that you truly are! William R. Adams, formerly from Maui,..but currently from Lk. Montezuma Az.
I met Vin in Mt. Shasta California and overheard the conversation he was having about building this sauna. I got to see some other photos of the construction project- at first I thought it was photos of the inside of a classic yacht that was rebuilt but vin assured me that it was a sauna! I'm certain the Acorn Sauna is one of a kind and vin did a remarkable piece of craftsmanship in its creation. He is a friendly guy and definately an artist 🙂

I met Vin Randomly one Time on a plane journey from North Spain and he had a remarkable effect on me at the time I was going through a rough enough patch in my life. A real life hippy from California . Me being from Ireland it was like meeting the man upstairs especially the way he spoke so calm and collected .In my head he was what I’d pictured God to look like. He told me about his sauna gave me advice and to this day 15 years ago I think about him.
