Leaf Cutter Ants at Albuquerque Botanic Garden

The largest ants cut leaves, which they haul back to their colonies and make fungus, which they eat. Cutting leaves stimulates plant growth and enriches the soil. Leaf cutter ants range from southwestern America down to South America.

Can you blame me for being a bit jumpy when I detected movement on the floor of the snake museum. Phew! Just a friendly tortoise, amblin’ around. Note geodesic pattern of hexagons, pentagons.
