Our Next Book: Wheels and Water

Our next book will be on nomadic living in the 21st century. Homes on wheels and homes in the water. Campers, RVs, trailers, house trucks, house buses, and bike rigs, as well as sailboats and houseboats. We won’t start working on it until the summer, but if you have any material for us, please let us know. We’ll contact you when we get, um, rolling.

*By this we mean road rigs, not small cabins on trailer platforms that are meant to be moved infrequently.

About Lloyd Kahn

Lloyd Kahn started building his own home in the early '60s and went on to publish books showing homeowners how they could build their own homes with their own hands. He got his start in publishing by working as the shelter editor of the Whole Earth Catalog with Stewart Brand in the late '60s. He has since authored six highly-graphic books on homemade building, all of which are interrelated. The books, "The Shelter Library Of Building Books," include Shelter, Shelter II (1978), Home Work (2004), Builders of the Pacific Coast (2008), Tiny Homes (2012), and Tiny Homes on the Move (2014). Lloyd operates from Northern California studio built of recycled lumber, set in the midst of a vegetable garden, and hooked into the world via five Mac computers. You can check out videos (one with over 450,000 views) on Lloyd by doing a search on YouTube:

  2. Your new book just arrived in the mail. I ordered it from Powells, an independent bookstore in Portland, so it was great to support two wonderful, independent book providers!

  3. I'm already chomping at the bit for the RVs, trucks, buses and bikes book!!!! My favorite part of HomeWork was the few pages of travel homes in the back. I'm stoked!
    Best of luck! – Jen

  4. I am so happy your Tiny Homes book has done so well. Yesterday we were doing a book presentation at a local independent book store in Bellingham, Village Books. One of the early arrivals had your Shelter book in hand. I mentioned Tiny Homes and he said he just bought that and had it at home. We were already in your Tiny Homes book, but there are lots of other float cabins on Powell Lake you could consider. One is being built right now by John, the same man who built our cabin in 1999. Wayne wrote a book about it called Cabin Number 5 (it's the fifth one John's built). You might want to take a look at it.

    Here's a link to Cabin Number 5.

  5. Way to go!! I can't believe you've got the next one coming so quickly! Stoked!

By the way, would you be looking for an intern when you get the new book underway? I have experience in print design and web development, and a huge interest in alternative architecture.

    Keep keepin it real,
    Isaac

  6. We'll be on the list as soon as you are that much closer! Just reading the title gets me excited to see it (and jealous of the wonderful interviews and journeys you'll be taking to make it happen!)

  8. I have been re-newvating a 1970 Pace Arrow motorhome, inspired by housebuses, gypsy caravans, and Builders of the Coast. Built on the cheap on weekends and teacher summerbreaks,it is coming along in Seattle. Fairly eclectic and cozy, not quite ever done… Want some photos?

  9. Lloyd….been a fan of your books from the very first Shelter one.
Back in the late 60's I lived in SoCal in Hermosa Beach.Surfed and
built gypsie campers on old pickups for my friends.I have several photos from back then,if you could use them for your new book,as it
would be an honor to grace the pages of your publication.
Last saw you at my friend Dante's Northtown Books in Arcata.Been
living on the Lost Coast in Petrolia. The last piece of unspoiled coast
    in California….take care
