The Cube: Snappy Little Nissan SUV

Saw this parked last night nearby. The designers got a lot of stuff right here — it just looks sensible. (Reminds me of the look of those cars in that animated movie about same.)

Lloyd Kahn started building his own home in the early '60s and went on to publish books showing homeowners how they could build their own homes with their own hands. He got his start in publishing by working as the shelter editor of the Whole Earth Catalog with Stewart Brand in the late '60s. He has since authored six highly-graphic books on homemade building, all of which are interrelated. The books, "The Shelter Library Of Building Books," include Shelter, Shelter II (1978), Home Work (2004), Builders of the Pacific Coast (2008), Tiny Homes (2012), and Tiny Homes on the Move (2014). Lloyd operates from Northern California studio built of recycled lumber, set in the midst of a vegetable garden, and hooked into the world via five Mac computers.   1. Oh, it is cute, isn't it? I'll bet a person could put the seats down and carry 2x4s in it. I keep telling my husband I need a pickup in case I have to buy plywood. He can't imagine why I would even think about plywood, never mind buying it. (City boy, he's never bought an electric drill, either.)

  4. My sister has one and loves it. I rented one to drive to Fort Worth from OKC. After that I swore I'd never drive one again. It was very susceptible to crosswinds and passing Semi's. It's great for zipping around town but I didn't feel safe in it on the highway.

  5. It's a car!!! Big deal. Our civilisations reliance and obsession with cars is one of the principle reasons we are in the environmental mess we are in (with worse to come unless we kick the habit!)
