Gary’s Van Home

Coincidence or cosmic, this guy, who turned out to be Gary Moffat, came up to me in the lobby of the little hotel where I was staying in San Jose del Cabo, and said “Lloyd!”

Turns out he had sent me pics of his decked-out Chrysler hybrid minivan a week earlier.

We were on the same wave length.

Here are a few rushed shots of his rig, I asked him to send me details for my blog. It’s a great build; he gets 33 mpg, at times 40 mpg.

About Lloyd Kahn

Lloyd Kahn started building his own home in the early '60s and went on to publish books showing homeowners how they could build their own homes with their own hands. He got his start in publishing by working as the shelter editor of the Whole Earth Catalog with Stewart Brand in the late '60s. He has since authored six highly-graphic books on homemade building, all of which are interrelated. The books, "The Shelter Library Of Building Books," include Shelter, Shelter II (1978), Home Work (2004), Builders of the Pacific Coast (2008), Tiny Homes (2012), and Tiny Homes on the Move (2014). Lloyd operates from Northern California studio built of recycled lumber, set in the midst of a vegetable garden, and hooked into the world via five Mac computers. One Response to Gary’s Van Home

  1. Hello! We are Repair Life Design, a company based in Seoul, South Korea that strives to reduce e-waste by repairing electronic devices. In Korea, there is a growing interest in van life, where people choose to live in converted vehicles. While there are various approaches, such as DIY modifications or purchasing specialized camping vehicles, the movement seems relatively passive compared to the stories featured in Lloyd Kahn’s blog.

I’ve read about four of Lloyd Kahn’s books and found them incredibly inspiring. His stories are so vibrant and energetic that they make me want to jump right into the action. It’s even more amazing to know that these stories are based on real-life experiences!
