Jay works with wood, metal, shell and paper. His primary medium is red and yellow cedar, along with alder and spruce. Jay has been trained in the Kwakwaka‘wakw style but he often works in classical Nuxalk or Bella Coola, Tlingit and Haida styles. He has been taught the traditional/proper shapes and form — lines that define historical properties and stories of the pieces with respect and dignity in great detail. He primarily carves original Northwest Coast Indian Art and is occasionally commissioned for art pieces of historic master works. He has traveled extensively to visit museums and study older pieces.

About Lloyd Kahn
Lloyd Kahn started building his own home in the early '60s and went on to publish books showing homeowners how they could build their own homes with their own hands. He got his start in publishing by working as the shelter editor of the
Whole Earth Catalog with Stewart Brand in the late '60s. He has since authored six highly-graphic books on homemade building, all of which are interrelated. The books, "The Shelter Library Of Building Books," include
Shelter,
Shelter II (1978),
Home Work (2004),
Builders of the Pacific Coast (2008),
Tiny Homes (2012), and
Tiny Homes on the Move (2014). Lloyd operates from Northern California studio built of recycled lumber, set in the midst of a vegetable garden, and hooked into the world via five Mac computers. You can check out videos (one with over 450,000 views) on Lloyd by doing a search on YouTube:
Love the mask art!
Lloyd, I have pics of the house of a friend of a friend with totem carvings on some of the beams the house is made of, but could not figure out how to attach, so I guess that is not allowed… Anyway, this guy found some 18″ x 36″ x 90 ft. Doug Fir beams that were in a Navy warehouse somewhere around Seattle, that he was able to procure. Cut 30 feet off the ends and was able to make the entire house out of 7 or 8 of those – about 50 ft by 30 ft. Lots of chainsaw work!
Got a local totem carver to do some art. Very cool house! Would send you a couple of pics if that would be of interest. I think it kinda goes to the theme of alternative housing.??
Regards!
Sure, love to see pics. Pls send to lloyd@shelterpub.com
Will post on blog.
Thanks!
Hello! The mask you have pictured on the bottom left is not Jay Brabants work and should be removed.
