Wisconsin Riverside Park Bandshell by Roald Gundersen

Hi Lloyd,

You may recall, we came to your door on March 18th, when you were heading out the door to the printers for your new book.  I mentioned you had blogged about an article in the NYTimes on my work in 2009.  I’ve built with trees from sustainably managed forests — using mostly the worst first — for over 30 years, and I thought you’d enjoy the attached bandshell I completed two years ago in my hometown of La Crosse, WI, mostly with trees from the land I live on and steward.

With friends in San Anselmo, I expect we’ll be back out before too long and it would be a treat to spend a few hours sharing a meal and some stories.  Thanks for your work in supporting and promoting natural building through these many years.

Cheers, Roald

About Lloyd Kahn

Lloyd Kahn started building his own home in the early '60s and went on to publish books showing homeowners how they could build their own homes with their own hands. He got his start in publishing by working as the shelter editor of the Whole Earth Catalog with Stewart Brand in the late '60s. He has since authored six highly-graphic books on homemade building, all of which are interrelated. The books, "The Shelter Library Of Building Books," include Shelter, Shelter II (1978), Home Work (2004), Builders of the Pacific Coast (2008), Tiny Homes (2012), and Tiny Homes on the Move (2014). Lloyd operates from Northern California studio built of recycled lumber, set in the midst of a vegetable garden, and hooked into the world via five Mac computers. You can check out videos (one with over 450,000 views) on Lloyd by doing a search on YouTube:

  1. Your build is a creation of beauty and soul. It is bound to imbue others with joy, creativity and enthusiasm for your work.

Hope some who have enjoyed it, have let you know.

Maybe consider suggesting to schools/scouts/girl guides etc, that they consider hosting a meeting under its shelter. Youth often
“get it” before adults..(and it could be a seed spark for future enjoyment)
