I'm the biggest fan of wood ( I own a forest and I am an avid woodsman and woodworker) and technology has been my bread and butter for 30+ years.
However good this looks, it's the most irresponsible use of a precious resource, I don't care if the forest was certified or not. Think about it. That tree grew for 80+ years and wood, if properly cared for can last 100's more years. Now, how long is that iPad going to be around, even if it is used to its last dying days? And what happens to that wood cover when the iPad is ditched?
Please, save us from our own stupidity and greed.

Jack, I don't log it if that is what you are wondering. It's mostly an indigenous forest and a sanctuary for the native flora and fauna and for humans to enjoy on occasion. A small part of it is being enhanced with food crops, fruit and nut trees, grapevines, strawberries, blackberries and the like.
I use my woodworking skills to produce practical and lasting items using recycled rimu wood taken from old houses. See, the wood even outlasts our houses.

My opinion is this…..your opinion was unnecessarily sanctimonious,condescending and rude.You brag about your use of recycled materials to produce "practical and lasting items" yet seem reluctant to share what these items are(seems like a missed opportunity to me). The iPad cover cover seems very practical and lasting to me. I would bet that these beautifully crafted items will be around in various uses long after the tablets are relegated to a scrap heap in India or Ghana. Is it possible that they are also made from recycled or end run stock? Is it bio-degradable?…

Since I started all this, I'll add my 2 cents, prompted by the mean-spirited comments of Jacksanass (this is not a pseudonym of daltxguy, right?). Daltx' original comment of ":irresponsible use of precious resources" is a weird one. There's a minute amount of wood used here, and wood is a renewable resource. If you followed this line of reasoning, you wouldn't use wood for anything. And I can understand Jack wanting to know just what kind of items Daltx produces out of wood, but he didn't get an answer. There's less wood in one of these iPad covers than in a single piece of oak firewood. Lord save us from the holier than thou folks; whatever you do is gonna be wrong by them.
Thanks Lloyd…I may have gotten a little hot under the collar, but hypocrisy has a way of doing that to me. I've had to live with plenty of my own. 40 years as an environmentalist and 35 as a carpenter can make you a little crazy, but one thing I ain't is holier than anybody.Having lived through the holier than,hipper than, greener than,leftier than (ad nauseum) disintegration of the beautiful things that were being born in the 60/70's (yes, the 60's did happen in the 70's) it just pisses me off when I see it happening again.

I know what it takes to grow trees for market. 35 years before my softwood trees can be cut for timber. My hardwood trees are on an 80 year rotation. If you think tending a tree for 35 years or 80 years and then turning it into an iPad cover is a good use, then so be it. I don't.
