Apocalypse Now

This hit us by surprise. At 8 AM, it was as dark as pre-dawn. Reddish-dark. Thick layer of black ash on cars. Funny, no smell. Nature to humanoids: you’re fucking up the planet, people.

About Lloyd Kahn

Lloyd Kahn started building his own home in the early '60s and went on to publish books showing homeowners how they could build their own homes with their own hands. He got his start in publishing by working as the shelter editor of the Whole Earth Catalog with Stewart Brand in the late '60s. He has since authored six highly-graphic books on homemade building, all of which are interrelated. The books, "The Shelter Library Of Building Books," include Shelter, Shelter II (1978), Home Work (2004), Builders of the Pacific Coast (2008), Tiny Homes (2012), and Tiny Homes on the Move (2014). Lloyd operates from Northern California studio built of recycled lumber, set in the midst of a vegetable garden, and hooked into the world via five Mac computers. 1. Horrors.

Will pray that you/your beloved/your loved ones and close ones/homestead stay safe.

These images, and others I’ve seen in media/news, makes me understand why much earlier “cultures”/folks would believe
the “end of times was near”…

    take care, all.

  2. Here in Europe I was horrified when seeing the images Thursday night while staying up too late, watching tv.
The bad news just seems overwhelming these days, coming in via tv and internet, instantly. The constant stream of headlines about pandemic, fires, decreasing biodiversity is not a healthy routine to add to my every day, so I keep it limited. I don’t want to be blind either, so I do read quite a bit, but I am grateful that I can counter the negative news with inspiring reads and viewing uplifting stories. Earlier this week, we watched a youtube documentary from 5 years ago about your way of life. We recognised the sourdough bread baking process (we bake it too), the vegetable garden…: we travel in the same direction. Right now, the apples are ready for picking – we have many old types we planted in our garden- and they taste fantastic, even if they have worms and wasps enjoying them too. The last tomatoes ripen outside. If I didn’t know any better, I would think it’s a great time…

I wish clear skies will return soon for all suffering due to the fires.

  3. A big chunk of Australia was also on fire this year. The ash blew all the way to New Zealand. Some people said the fires were started by arsonists but I have no idea if that is true.

  4. Yeah, it surprised us too – we had about fifteen minutes to get out before our home and everything else we owned (except for the clothes we were wearing, a few essentials and the car we were in) disappeared in the conflagration that hit our little town of Phoenix, Oregon. We’re re-established temporarily with relatives and compared with what hit us last week, the lingering pall of smoke isn’t so bad – as long as one stays inside. Outside, an anti-covid mask helps only a little bit. Otherwise, we’re ok and in a good situation, unlike way too many others.
