Handmade: The Half Acre Homestead Book in Progress

Crocheted blanket by Elisabeth Kirkland

I’m finally fully into laying out this book. It’s been a long time coming. A record of our home, kitchen, utensils, pantry, garden, shop, tools, all the stuff we make, starting in the mid-70s.

I’ll post things here as I do layout…

About Lloyd Kahn

Lloyd Kahn started building his own home in the early '60s and went on to publish books showing homeowners how they could build their own homes with their own hands. He got his start in publishing by working as the shelter editor of the Whole Earth Catalog with Stewart Brand in the late '60s. He has since authored six highly-graphic books on homemade building, all of which are interrelated. The books, "The Shelter Library Of Building Books," include Shelter, Shelter II (1978), Home Work (2004), Builders of the Pacific Coast (2008), Tiny Homes (2012), and Tiny Homes on the Move (2014). Lloyd operates from Northern California studio built of recycled lumber, set in the midst of a vegetable garden, and hooked into the world via five Mac computers. You can check out videos (one with over 450,000 views) on Lloyd by doing a search on YouTube:

  1. Great! I think the elders have to pass down their hard earned wisdom to the following generations to leave a record & maybe save someone from having to guess what works or hoe to make it. Good luck with your book!

  2. Like just about everyone who has followed your career, waiting with relish for your new book. Well, hell, Lloyd, I’m 86 now, and although I’ve read all your books and followed your blogs, I’ve never built anything other than a garden trellis. But it’s been great dreaming, and thanks for that.

  3. Dear Lloyd,

I’m here in California visiting the Valley with the renowned photographer Ramak Fazel: he worked for several years for Domus and Abitare magazines, among the two most infuencial architecture’s media in Italy.
We are visiting California from today, Saturday Dec. the 7th until Wed December the 11th. 2019.
We’re doing a reasearch on California’s cultural influence and we really love your books!!!
Do you have any chance to meet us for a coffee???
