Abandoned Home Near Independence, Oregon

Nicely designed old home. Note the way the plane of the roof extends to form the porch roof. A stairway led to two upstairs bedrooms. There was a brick fireplace.

When I go inside places like this, I can feel the lives that were lived within.

Old homes designed like this show the cluelessness of almost all homes designed these days by architects.

About Lloyd Kahn

Lloyd Kahn started building his own home in the early '60s and went on to publish books showing homeowners how they could build their own homes with their own hands. He got his start in publishing by working as the shelter editor of the Whole Earth Catalog with Stewart Brand in the late '60s. He has since authored six highly-graphic books on homemade building, all of which are interrelated. The books, "The Shelter Library Of Building Books," include Shelter, Shelter II (1978), Home Work (2004), Builders of the Pacific Coast (2008), Tiny Homes (2012), and Tiny Homes on the Move (2014). Lloyd operates from Northern California studio built of recycled lumber, set in the midst of a vegetable garden, and hooked into the world via five Mac computers. Agreed. Looking at this, I can almost hear a kid's footsteps running up to his bedroom, and see him stepping out the window onto the porch roof to catch a breeze on hot summer nights.

If old houses could tell stories, I'd buy the books.

  2. Hi All ! Well I don't have a book to share, but I've always got a song, here is part of one written in the nineties called; " Little Lonesome House,"… Ridin' down that highway not knowin' where I was goin', I saw you sittin here all on your own…Well, You just looked so sad and as lonesome as could be, I thought I should stop awhile and keep you company…Oh, little lonesome house you're just like me, for all that we have left now are a lot of memories…Yes, little lonesome house we're just the same, we don't have nobody not a soul to our name…For once you were filled with love from your rafters to the floor, now all you have are empty rooms, no one lives here anymore…Seeing that little lonesome house in Oregon, compelled me to share those particular verses. Sorry, but they're not written, in the proper format, of course that isn't the full song either.
    Blessings Beaucoup, C.C. Corne'
