Heirloom (Real) Tomatoes

“An heirloom tomato…is an open-pollinated (non-hybrid) heirloom cultivar of tomato. Heirloom tomatoes have become increasingly popular and more readily available in recent years. They are grown for historical interest, access to wider varieties, and by people who wish to save seeds from year to year, as well as for their taste, which is widely perceived to be better than modern tomatoes. They do however have a shorter shelf life and less disease resistance than most commercial tomatoes…

Heirloom tomatoes lack a genetic mutation that gives tomatoes an appealing uniform red color while sacrificing the fruit’s sweet taste. Varieties bearing this mutation, which have been favored by industry since the 1940’s, feature fruits with lower levels of carotenoids and a decreased ability to make sugar within the fruit.…” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heirloom_tomato

“…Only two things that money can’t buy

      That’s true love & homegrown tomatoes…”

Note, the knife shown is my favorite vegetable chopper. It holds an edge forever, and is cheap (under $10!). Made in Thailand and reviewed here on CoolTools.

  1. I am a serious foodie and amateur chef and have had some seriously expensive knives. My last knife cost me well over $100.

When my son recently handed me a Kiwi knife he had bought on a trip in Texas. "I thought it was cool looking dad." When he informed me he paid something like $3.00 for it, I immediately thought, "Well, it's the thought that counts."

I gotta say, it's one of the best knives I have EVER owned. Granted it feels cheap in your hand, but the thing slices and dices like nobodies business, and you don't have to baby it! It is my 'go-to' vegetable prep knife over everything else I have.

  2. My favorite summer lunch – BLT with generous slices of heirloom tomatoes.

I ordered 3 different Kiwi knives from wokshop.com for 14.85 plus shipping, can't go wrong at that price. I have a block of Wusthofs that have never held an edge very well yet cost hundreds of $. They might be going to craigslist along with a lot of other things…

  3. i have been growing organic heirloom tomato varieties for over twenty years– there is nothing better. i have never had issues with heirloom tomato plants being less hardy than hybrid varieties. the heirloom plants always seem to stand tall and take a beating. i harvest my own seeds, if would ever like some seeds, shoot me an email. i love to share!
