Lloyd Kahn started building his own home in the early '60s and went on to publish books showing homeowners how they could build their own homes with their own hands. He got his start in publishing by working as the shelter editor of the Whole Earth Catalog with Stewart Brand in the late '60s. He has since authored six highly-graphic books on homemade building, all of which are interrelated. The books, "The Shelter Library Of Building Books," include Shelter, Shelter II (1978), Home Work (2004), Builders of the Pacific Coast (2008), Tiny Homes (2012), and Tiny Homes on the Move (2014). Lloyd operates from Northern California studio built of recycled lumber, set in the midst of a vegetable garden, and hooked into the world via five Mac computers.   2. Hi Lloyd,
    I picked up the north coast journal in Eureka, CA, today and noticed you spoke at the book store in Arcata yesterday. I am a long term fan of yours and have both Shelter books and Pacific builder's of the North coast, which I peruse regularly. I am signing the papers to go into escrow tomorrow on my 12 acres in Fortuna, CA. It has taken me years to get to this point and I am finally reaching my goals of starting my own building project and homestead. I was a bit sick when I noticed I missed your talk. I am a woman and professional artist of 43 who participated deeply in the building of my 4300 sf house in Houston, TX, but am now going at this project alone. I desperately wish I had been there yesterday, because I am sure I am your biggest fan in these parts. Are you still in town?? I would love to take you to lunch at the best restaurant in Humboldt, (which isn't saying much), for a chance to pick your brain. I am starting to design a house that has some aspects of Michael Reynold's earthship, (mostly the greywater system the greenhouse), as well as strawbale and traditional design elements like cedar shakes. We will be completely off the grid because services are not available to us. We plan to raise goats, geese, chickens and rabbits for meat as well as extensive gardens. I moved to this area in December and expected to find a larger alternative building community than I have, but have not been able to find them. Please say yes to lunch! I have to tell you that my favorite builder in your books is Sun ray Kelley, of whom I share a name. Anyway, if you are gone already, please know that you are greatly appreciated here, by a native Texan, Humboldt county transplant.
    If you are still around and could spare some time, I will clear my schedule.

  3. @Cheryl should take you to Carter House Inn, which you've pictured. I say it rivals anything in Houston, except maybe Pappaeaux 🙂 And make sure you clear any plans with the building department – neighbors do complain. And Houston doesn't have nearly as many earthquakes as Fortuna.
