Couple Seeking Bona Fide Inexpensive Eco-Opportunity In New England

Dear Lloyd Kahn and Co.,

My 45 year-old English husband, who has a log house-building qualification from the Log and Timber School in Vancouver, and I, a 35 year-old New Yorker with excellent knowledge of gardening and gathering wild foods (notably the growing of herbal plants), are looking for a suitable training opportunity to commence as soon as possible.

We yearn to be outdoors a great deal and living with our shepherd-retriever dog in a modest dwelling. Adam has extensive experience as a vehicle-dependent (Land Rover) expedition traveler all over Europe, including France, Spain and Iceland. Could somebody perhaps point us towards appropriate places where we might be welcomed?

Like so many people, we are avid followers of Lloyd Kahn’s blog, and Adam has spent a lifetime reading the Shelter publications.

So many thanks for your reply!

Cheers,

Adam Hay and Rebecca Hirschfield Hay

About Lloyd Kahn

Lloyd Kahn started building his own home in the early '60s and went on to publish books showing homeowners how they could build their own homes with their own hands. He got his start in publishing by working as the shelter editor of the Whole Earth Catalog with Stewart Brand in the late '60s. He has since authored six highly-graphic books on homemade building, all of which are interrelated. The books, "The Shelter Library Of Building Books," include Shelter, Shelter II (1978), Home Work (2004), Builders of the Pacific Coast (2008), Tiny Homes (2012), and Tiny Homes on the Move (2014). Lloyd operates from Northern California studio built of recycled lumber, set in the midst of a vegetable garden, and hooked into the world via five Mac computers. 1. You guys should move to Northern California. New England has lost the Back to the Land flair it had in the 1970's-80's. Wild crafting with your dog, that screams Bay Area! Also there are oppertunities out here for elfin freaks, where so much of the rest of the country won't hand you a dollar unles you are completley square. I'm from Maine, I even moved my folks out here now we all live in the coolest urban farm compound. I think the copy of Shelter my folks left on the coffee table when I was a kid might of warped my mind in the best way possible, it planted a seed and years later the good people of the Bay Area have really helped my family begin to realize it. Just wanted to tell you what worked for me!
